Chiropractic Care for Infant Constipation: A Holistic Approach

The journey of parenthood is filled with joy, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the common concerns among parents is their baby's digestive health, particularly when it comes to issues like constipation. While there are various remedies available, chiropractic care emerges as a holistic approach that some parents explore. In this blog post, we delve into the relationship between chiropractic care and infant constipation, exploring its efficacy, safety, and considerations for parents.

Constipation in babies is not uncommon and can be distressing for both the baby and their caregivers. It's characterized by infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, straining during bowel movements, and discomfort or pain. Several factors contribute to infant constipation, including diet, dehydration, formula changes, medications, and even stress or tension.

Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the spine and nervous system and how this relationship affects overall health. Chiropractic care has gained attention for its potential benefits in pediatric care, including addressing issues like colic, reflux, and yes, even constipation.

If you’ve taken your baby or toddler to a chiropractor for constipation, you’ve probably heard the phrase “poop button”. We use this phrase for humor because it is very common for little ones to poop or even have blow outs while being adjusted or after their adjustments. There are a few reasons why chiropractic can help littles ones with constipation. The first is misalignments in the spine, particularly in the lower back and pelvic regions that might impact the function of the digestive system, potentially contributing to constipation. The second is tightness in ligaments in the pelvis. There is a ligament in the pelvis called sacrotuberous ligament that connects the sacrum to the hip bone. Releasing this ligament can relax the pelvis and help with constipation. The third is aligning parts of the spine that control the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The parasympathetic nervous system is known as the “rest and digest” part of the nervous system. By aligning the PNS, the body can relax and focus on digestion in turn helping with constipation.

Although chiropractic care can help alleviate constipation in babies and children, parents should also focus on factors like the baby's diet, hydration, physical activity, and ensuring a comfortable and supportive environment for bowel movements.

Infant constipation can be a challenging issue for both babies and parents, but there are holistic approaches like chiropractic care that some families find beneficial. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure the health and well-being of your baby, and exploring alternative therapies like chiropractic care can be part of that journey.
